Mike Krzyzewski, also known as “Coach K,” is one of the most successful coaches in the history of college basketball. He is best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team, which he led for over 40 years.
Krzyzewski was born on February 13, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. He played college basketball at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was a point guard under Coach Bob Knight.
After graduating from West Point in 1969, Krzyzewski served in the United States Army for five years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the Army, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Indiana University under Coach Knight.
In 1980, Krzyzewski was hired as the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils. He quickly turned the program around, leading the team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly a decade in his second season. Under Krzyzewski’s leadership, Duke became one of the most dominant programs in college basketball, winning five NCAA championships (in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015) and appearing in 12 Final Fours.
Krzyzewski has also been a successful coach at the international level, leading the United States men’s national basketball team to three Olympic gold medals (in 2008, 2012, and 2016) and two FIBA World Cup championships (in 2010 and 2014).
Throughout his career, Krzyzewski has been recognized for his coaching excellence with numerous awards and honors, including Naismith College Coach of the Year (five times), ACC Coach of the Year (12 times), and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (in 2001). He retired from coaching after the 2021-2022 season.
