Lionel Messi, the renowned soccer star, has made the decision to head to the United States. Early June it was officially confirmed that he will join Inter Miami.  Inter Miami is part of  MLS; Messi joins as a free agent following his departure from PSG.  

The decision comes after Messi turned down a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia and a potential return to Barcelona.  As Messi joins his new MLS Team Inter Miami there are high hopes for a squad in last place.

In an interview with media, Messi elaborated on his decision to relocate to the U.S. He stated “If Barcelona didn’t work out, I wanted to leave Europe, staying away from the spotlight and prioritize my family.” By joining MLS, he aims to “experience football in a different way” while maintaining his commitment to excellence and success. He also stated a desire for a more peaceful state of mind.

The move is a  triumph not only for the MLS but also for Apple TV, the broadcaster of the league’s games. Messi, is a seven time a recipient of the Ballon d’Or award.  He also led Argentina to a World Cup victory. As Messi joins MLS in South Florida, Miami Inter and MLS will instantly see a spike in viewership. 

Messi’s Contract with Miami Inter


According to a source at Reuters familiar with Messi’s agreement in Miami.  His contract is likely to pave the way to acquire an ownership in the team.  Inter Miami is co-owned by former England captain David Beckham

Assuming everything unfolds as planned, Messi is projected to join his new team in July. The scheduled date for his debut match is set for July 21 at DRV PNK Stadium.  Inter Miami will face the Mexican team Cruz Azul. It is rumored that Messi turned down a contract to play in Saudi Arabia for 400 Million USD. 


Messi’s intricate agreement with Inter Miami will encompass his salary, bonuses, and ownership stake.  The combined deal is estimated to be valued between $125 million and $150 million.  In addition Apple and Adidas (sponsors of MLS), are now negotiating deals with Messi.

MLS (Major League Soccer) as we currently recognize it, originated in 1996. However, the initial endeavor to establish a professional soccer league in North America commenced in 1976. The first league was known as the NASL (North American Soccer League).

The NASL made aggressive attempts to attract some big names in the sport. Among them was legend Pele, who graced the American fields from the ages of 34 to 37.   With the New York Cosmos he won two championships. Subsequently, Pele became an ambassador for USA’s bid to host the 1994 World Cup and formm the MLS.
